Kenya's Indian Ocean coast offers warm turquoise water, coral reefs, white sand, Swahili culture and year-round warmth. The coast is also a malaria area and largely Muslim-majority — plan for both.
Main beach destinations (south → north)
- Diani Beach (Kwale) — the headline south-coast beach: long white sand, reef, resorts, watersports; reached via the Likoni ferry or Ukunda airstrip.
- Tiwi, Galu — quieter beaches near Diani.
- Wasini Island / Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park — snorkeling, dolphins, dhow trips.
- Mombasa area — Nyali, Bamburi, Shanzu beaches north of the city; Fort Jesus & Old Town for culture.
- Watamu (Kilifi) — beautiful bays, Watamu Marine National Park, turtles; near Malindi, Gede Ruins, Arabuko-Sokoke Forest.
- Malindi — Italian-influenced resort town.

In & on the water
- Snorkeling & diving: reefs at Watamu, Kisite-Mpunguti, Diani; marine parks protect coral and fish.
- Marine wildlife: turtles, dolphins, reef fish; whale sharks seasonally; humpback whales (roughly Jul–Sep) off the coast.
- Watersports: kitesurfing (Diani is a hotspot, best in windy seasons ~Dec–Mar & Jun–Sep), windsurfing, stand-up paddle, deep-sea fishing, dhow cruises, glass-bottom boats.
Safety in the sea
- Tides matter: the reef and big tidal range mean water can retreat far; some swimming/reef-walking is tide-dependent — ask locals/lifeguards about times and safe spots.
- Currents/rip tides: heed flags and local advice; don't swim alone in unknown conditions.
- Reef care: don't touch/stand on coral; use reef-safe sunscreen; don't buy shells/coral/turtle products (illegal exports too — see customs file).
- Beach vendors: friendly but persistent selling and "beach boys" are common on some beaches — a polite firm "no thank you" ("hapana asante") works; agree prices before any tour/boat.
Cultural & practical notes
- Dress: swimwear is fine on the beach/at resorts, but cover up in towns and villages (shoulders/knees) — the coast is largely Muslim; Lamu especially expects modest dress.
- Ramadan: during the Muslim fasting month, some coastal eateries adjust hours — plan around it.
- Heat & malaria: hot/humid year-round; take malaria precautions (pills + repellent + nets).
- Getting there: fly to Mombasa (Moi Intl) or coastal airstrips (Ukunda/Diani, Malindi, Lamu), or take the SGR to Mombasa then road transfer.
- Best weather: driest/sunniest roughly Dec–Mar and Jun–Sep; heaviest rains around Apr–May.
