cultural note: A major Lower/Middle Stone Age site (excavated by the Leakeys) preserving huge numbers of Acheulean stone hand-axes and fossils, with evidence of human activity going back roughly a million years. Managed by National Museums of Kenya; boardwalk tours over the excavations. Often combined with a Lake Magadi day-trip.
